CWGC-hoveniers op bezoek bij Stichting Overloon War Chronicles

CWGC hoveniers in Overloon

Overloon War Chronicles Foundation had the honour of welcoming a group of gardeners from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) for their team day.
We shared stories about the Battle of Overloon, told a few personal tales of the soldiers buried at the local cemetery, and visited several historic Second World War sites in and around Overloon.

It was a meaningful day filled with history, connection and remembrance — values that lie at the heart of the CWGC’s work.

For over a hundred years, the distinctive rows of white headstones set in carefully maintained grounds have defined the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) cemeteries. From the very beginning, these places were designed as gardens of remembrance — spaces where nature and memory come together.

Inspired by renowned garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, the early planners embraced the traditional English cottage garden style. Colourful borders, soft lines and seasonal planting surround the headstones, creating a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere. The planting softens the stone architecture and invites quiet reflection.

As they look ahead to the next hundred years, the CWGC faces new challenges. Climate change and shifting weather patterns call for sustainable and innovative approaches. Yet their mission remains unchanged: to preserve the serene beauty and historical meaning of these remarkable places — living monuments of care, beauty and remembrance.
