Unveiling 14 october 2021
More than 100 graves at Overloon War Cemetery were given a face again 77 years after the liberation of Overloon. On 14 October, the first 100 portrait photos were presented in the presence of the Queen’s Commissioner of the Province of North Brabant, the Mayor of Boxmeer, children from the Josef School in Overloon and many other invited guests.
The King’s Commissioner has unveiled the 100th portrait photo. This photo is of the only Dutchman buried at Overloon War Cemetery: Wil van der Burgt. She was supported by Van der Burgt’s cousin of the same name. Overloon War Chronicles Foundation has spent the past few years working to give a face again to the often young boys who were killed and buried far from home. Their task is not yet complete, there are 281 soldiers buried in Overloon, and the aim is to give them all a face again.
The commemoration and unveiling can be seen in a comprehensive video report here.
