Glider pilot Briscoe

As section commander of E Squadron, 2nd Wing, Glider Pilot Regiment, Richard William Briscoe took part in the airborne landings at the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944.

After safely grounding his glider, he fell into German hands and was subsequently imprisoned in Oflag IX A/H in the small town of Spangenberg in north-eastern Hesse, Germany. Oflag stands for Offizierslager, the German word for a POW camp. 

One of the more famous prisoners in this camp at the time was British officer John Dutton Frost, who was involved in fighting for days around the Rhine Bridge at Arnhem during the Battle of Arnhem. After the war, the bridge was renamed the John Frost Bridge.
