Much attention and flowers for the war graves in Overloon

flowers on the graves

Every year on 14 October, we commemorate the liberation of Overloon and pay special attention to the soldiers who died during the Second World War and are buried in the Overloon war cemetery.

This year too, even more than other years, the graves were covered with flowers. This is certainly also due to the attention given by the adopters of the graves during these days of remembrance. Overloon War Chronicles is immensely pleased to see so many taking the trouble to visit the grave and also meet other adopters. It looked beautiful.

We regularly receive questions about the maintenance of the graves and what may and may not be placed or allowed at the graves. To avoid disappointment in the future, below are the main rules from the regulations of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission that manages the cemetery:

The layout, design and planting of the cemetery will follow a model used in every CWGC cemetery worldwide.
Only fresh cut flowers and “poppy” wreaths may be placed in front of the headstone.
No changes or additions may be made to the planting at the graves. This means, among other things, that nothing may be planted in the ground.
The CWGC gardeners who maintain the graves and grounds will remove spent flowers.
The Overloon War Chronicles Foundation has no control over this.
