Family visit of Bobby Milton
From 3 to 5 October 2025 we welcomed family members of Robert (Bobby) Milton in Overloon.
Bobby served with the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, 4th Battalion, and was killed in action at the age of 19 on 15 October 1944 in Overloon, in the area around the Schaartven.
After a warm meeting and introduction, we took them on a battlefield tour in the surroundings of Overloon. From Sint Anthonis, this regiment advanced in the early morning of 15 October 1944 towards Overloon, to liberate the last part of the village from occupation under heavy fighting. Sadly, this day claimed Bobby’s life.
We visited the area around the Schaartven, where Bobby fell and where he was first buried in a field grave near a farmhouse. It was a truly historic place for the family — it felt very close and deeply meaningful to be there.
Saturday was dedicated mainly to a commemorative ceremony at the grave of Bobby Milton, for almost everyone the first time they had been there. In the pouring rain, heartfelt words were spoken and music was played, including The Last Post, followed by a moment of silence. A wreath was laid, a candle lit, and a small rose left behind.
It felt as though the years since 1944 had disappeared. We felt united, standing together at the grave of a young man who was so dearly loved — and still is. It was a beautiful and moving moment.
For us as a Foundation, it was once again a confirmation of how important our work is: tracing families, telling their stories, and bringing them together at the graves of the men buried in at Overloon War Cemetery.
Once again, a friendship for life was born.
