Lots of attention for Overloon War Cemetery and Arthur Johnson exhibition
This year’s remembrance days brought many people to Overloon. At community center De Pit, visitors were drawn to the special exhibition of British veteran Arthur Johnson. His drawings, made during the war in villages around Overloon, left a deep impression. Volunteers from our Foundation provided additional information to the drawings about conditions in the villages concerned.
At the reading table with documentation and map material on the Second World War, memories and facts were discussed while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea with cake. We look back on a successful exhibition of Arthur Johnson’s work made available by his family members. We thank them for coming to the Netherlands and the lovely weekend we spent together.
Many thanks also to the staff of De Pit who thought and helped us build the exhibition and for all the good care during the weekend.
The Overloon War Cemetery also welcomed many: flowers were placed on many graves, and people took a moment to reflect on the names and stories behind the headstones. The photo signs made the stories about the lives of these military even more intimate.
It’s heartwarming to see so many people taking a moment to remember the soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom. Whether it’s standing quietly by a grave or looking at Johnson’s drawings, the past suddenly feels close. Every flower, every quiet moment shows: we haven’t forgotten. And their stories still live on, even with the next generations.
