A LONG-CHERISHED WISH COMES TRUE
We welcomed relatives of Private Albert Samuel Richmond to Overloon War Cemetery. This fulfilled a long-cherished wish of the granddaughter of Albert’s brother Walt to visit the grave of his beloved brother on her grandfather’s behalf. The grief over Albert’s loss has played a major role in this family’s lives. On this beautiful, sun-drenched autumn day, they paused by his grave and laid flowers in remembrance.
For us at the Overloon War Chronicles Foundation, these are very special moments. We actively seek out relatives of the servicemen buried at Overloon War Cemetery. Not only to reconnect families with their history, but also to discover more about the men behind the names on the gravestones. Who were they, where did they come from, and what was their military background? In this way, we can tell their stories ever more effectively and keep them alive.
During this visit, too, it became clear once again just how many stories can be passed down within a family. One of the relatives is a veteran himself and served in several wars. He modestly shared some of his experiences and told us about his military background. Without drawing attention to it himself, it was evident that these experiences had left a lasting impression. It was a special and valuable experience to be able to witness a small part of this.
After visiting the grave, we went together to the Overloon War Museum. We were guided by a young educator who led us enthusiastically and personally through various highlights of the museum. For our guests, this was a special addition to their visit to Albert’s grave. They were therefore very grateful that we were able to share this experience together.
This is what Overloon War Chronicles stands for: not just a name on a gravestone, but the person, their story and the family behind that name.
It remains a privilege to help families rediscover their history and, together, pass on the stories of these servicemen to future generations.
