From a scrap metal bin to a place of honor: A remarkable story from our colleague Tonnie
Something very special happened on May 4th. Our esteemed colleague Tonnie Ebben handed over four unique, historical field crosses to the visitors’ center of the War Cemetery in Bergen op Zoom.
The story behind these crosses is almost unbelievable: they were discovered in a scrap metal bin in Sint Anthonis! Fortunately, someone recognized their historical significance, and they found their way to Tonnie (owner of the war museum oorlogsmuseum van postzegel tot tank).
After a brief investigation, it turned out the crosses belonged to British and Canadian soldiers buried at the military honors fields in Bergen op Zoom. For Tonnie, there was no doubt: “I took good care of them, and now they are finally back home.”
A beautiful gesture on a very fitting day.
