Biography
Husband of Kay Cluett from Barnstaple, North Devon Ellacombe, Torquay, Devon.
Private Cluett was a member of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers,1st Bn., which was put into fight since Oktober 13th 1944 in the woods around Overloon, in the direction of Merselo. They fought a severe battle against the German Fallschirmjäger. The battle was complicated because of the large number of “Schu-mines” and the well-trained snipers that were hiding everywhere.
After Venray was liberated, fate struck on October 19th 1944 on private Cluett: While he volunteered to collect the mail, he was killed instantly by a headshot from a German sniper.
William John Cluett was buried at the temporary cemetery near A. van de Wijst. In May 1947 he was reburied at Overloon War Cemetery.
