Unieke film ‘In the hour of Victory’

in Overloon op 14 oktober 2022

🇳🇱 Moed. Loyaliteit. Liefde. Opoffering. Vier kernwaarden die de basis vormen van deze meeslepende docufilm over de Bermudaanse majoor Anthony F. “Toby” Smith en zijn Amerikaanse vrouw Faith tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Toby sneuvelde op 14 oktober 1944 tussen Overloon en Merselo en werd begraven op de Overloon War Cemetery. Maar de herinnering aan hem leeft voor altijd voort in dit tijdloze verhaal dat meer dan 50 jaar na het einde van de oorlog in persoonlijke brieven werd ontdekt.
De grimmige realiteit van de oorlog, de Duitse bommen op Londen, zijn militaire training in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, zijn vertrek naar het front, zijn gevechten in Europa. Tegenover zijn liefde voor zijn vrouw Faith en het verlangen naar het goede leven thuis. Het zijn allemaal bepalende factoren in dit verhaal.

Deze docufilm uit 2012 gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek “In the hour of Victory” won na de release verschillende prijzen op grote internationale filmfestivals in de Verenigde Staten en het Verenigd Koninkrijk en werd daar o.a. bekroond als beste documentaire en best geregisseerde documentaire.
Toch is deze film tot nu toe nog nooit te zien geweest in Europa.

Overloon War Chronicles is erin geslaagd om contact te leggen met de producent en kleinzoon van Toby, Jonathan D. Smith uit Bermuda. Jonathan vindt het een eer om de film over zijn grootvader alsnog aan de Overloonse bevolking en overige belangstellenden te kunnen presenteren. Jonathan komt zelf vanuit Bermuda naar Overloon om bij deze verlate Europese première van “In the hour of Victory” aanwezig te zijn.

🇬🇧 Unique film ‘In the hour of Victory” in Overloon on October 14th 2022

Courage. Loyalty. Love. Sacrifice. Four core values that form the basis of this compelling documentary film about Bermuda Major Anthony F. “Toby” Smith and his American wife Faith during the Second World War.

Toby was killed on 14 October 1944 between Overloon and Merselo and was buried at the Overloon War Cemetery. But his memory lives on forever in this timeless story discovered in personal letters more than 50 years after the end of the war.
The grim reality of war, the German bombs on London, his military training in the UK, his departure for the front, his battles in Europe. His love for his wife Faith and the desire for the good life at home. They are all defining factors in this story.

This 2012 documentary film based on the book of the same name “In the Hour of Victory” won several awards after its release at major international film festivals in the United States and the United Kingdom, including best documentary and best directed documentary.
Yet this film has never been shown in Europe.

Overloon War Chronicles has succeeded in making contact with the producer and grandson of Toby, Jonathan D. Smith from Bermuda. Jonathan is honoured to be able to present the film about his grandfather to the people of Overloon and other interested parties. Jonathan himself will travel from Bermuda to Overloon to be present at this belated European premiere of “In the hour of Victory”. 

Registration for this unique film night is only possible via the form. 
Admission is free, a voluntary contribution to the work of Overloon War Chronicles is welcome. Refreshments are at your own expense.
